The Soft Life Lie: Real Costs for Ghanaian Youth in 2026
If you open Instagram or TikTok right now, you will see it everywhere.
But if you step out of your house and walk to the nearest trotro station, you will see the other side of the story. The side that does not make it onto the feed.
We are living through a strange moment in Ghana. On screen, we are thriving. In reality, we are just trying to stay afloat.
THE PRICE OF JUST EXISTING
Let us talk about the numbers, because they do not lie.
A plate of waakye that was GHC 15 two years ago is now pushing GHC 35. A bottle of water is no longer small change. It is a conscious decision. For a student or a young professional earning an entry-level salary, or worse, relying on an allowance, this is not just inflation. It is a squeeze.
I spoke to a friend yesterday who works in digital marketing. She makes what many would consider a good starting salary. Yet, she told me she spends nearly 40 percent of her income just on transport and data.
I am working hard, she said, but I feel like I am running on a treadmill. I am moving, but I am not getting anywhere. She is not alone. From Accra to Kumasi, from Tamale to Takoradi, young Ghanaians are feeling the weight of an economy that demands more while giving back less.

Remember when a side hustle was something cool to mention at parties? Now, it is survival.
Scroll through LinkedIn or Twitter GH, and you will not just see job titles. You will see Freelance Writer, Virtual Assistant, Data Entry Specialist, and Baker. People are not collecting titles for fun. They are stacking them because one income stream rarely covers rent, light bills, and food anymore.
The pressure to be productive is constant. If you are not working your 9 to 5, you are building a brand. If you are not building a brand, you are learning a new skill. Rest feels like guilt. Sleep feels like wasted time.
THE DIGITAL DIVIDE IS WIDENING
And yet, we are told that technology is the great equalizer. That anyone with a phone can learn anything.
But try telling that to the student sharing one smartphone with three siblings, struggling to download a lecture video on limited data. Try telling that to the graduate who has the skills but no laptop to showcase them.

SO, WHAT DO WE DO?
We keep going. Because that is what Ghanaians do.
We find ways to save. We share resources. We support each other’s businesses. We laugh at the absurdity of it all over a shared plate of rice balls.
But we also need to be honest. The soft life narrative is leaving too many people behind. It is okay to admit that things are hard. It is okay to say that you are tired.
