UTAG, and other organized labour unions declare an indefinite strike
UTAG and other organized labour declare indefinite Strike Action effective 27th December 2022. UTAG gave their support to the strike barely 24 hours after TUC gave the government up to the end of day 26th December to exempt the pension funds of Ghanaian workers from the proposed debt exchange programme.
UTAG and other organized labour Unions have officially declared their intention to embark on an indefinite Strike Action effective 27th December 2022.
This is due to the Government’s decision to introduce a debt exchange programme.
What this means is that students will be at the receiving end should the strike go on as planned. Students have reacted to the upcoming strike. One comment that caught the eye of the Ghana Education News team on Twitter read, “Hmmmmm. I don’t understand why we the students should be on the receiving end. We pay huge sums of money as school fees whilst they embark on their strike. The funny thing is, they don’t consider the strikes the lecturers embark on whilst charging fees.”
“What it means is that all workers of Ghana should stay at home from 27th December. Don’t go to work, stay at home, and we will stay at home until we hear publicly that all pension funds have been exempted.” Dr Yaw Baah said.
The TUC has given the government up to the end of 26th December to take a decision on the matter.
The strike action if commenced on Tuesday 27th December will continue until the government comes out to publicly announce its decision not to include the pension funds of Ghanaian workers. This was part of the strong warning and information contained in the announcement made by the TUC president Dr Yaw Baah on Monday, 19th December 2022.
In the coming days, organized labour expects the Nana Addo-led government to take proactive steps to address the concerns of the workers. One can imagine the worrying economic and security concerns should all workers across the country fail to report to work due to a nationwide strike across all industries and sectors of the economy.

The government needs to start serious engagements to avoid the halting of economic activities and loss of revenue to the state.
The decision by UTAG and other organized labour to declare indefinite strike action effective 27th December 2022 will negatively affect the 2023 academic calendar of all universities and should pre-tertiary schools reopen while the strike is still in force, there will be more troubles within the education sector.
