19 Year Old UK Student Nurse Drowns At Busua Beach

Millie Ann Gentry, a 19-year-old student nurse from the UK, drowns at the Busua Beach during her volunteer placement in a hospital in Ghana.
The heartbreaking incident occurred on March 17 of the previous year, just two weeks into her month-long placement.
According to a statement provided by her friend, Miss Byrnes, who herself is not a proficient swimmer, they were caught off guard by a powerful wave that swept them into the sea while they were swimming. Despite Miss Byrnes’ efforts to keep Millie afloat and calling out for assistance, she sadly succumbed to the rough waters.
The ordeal lasted approximately 15 minutes, during which time another friend, Mr. Mallinson, who was also volunteering, witnessed the distressing scene. With the waves and currents proving too formidable, Mr. Mallinson was left with no choice but to seek help, leaving his two friends struggling in the water.
Miss Byrnes was eventually rescued after roughly 30 minutes, but tragically, Millie’s body was not recovered until four hours later. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by the unpredictable nature of the sea, especially in unfamiliar environments.
Millie’s untimely passing has undoubtedly left a void in the lives of her loved ones, friends, and colleagues. Her dedication to nursing and her willingness to volunteer abroad exemplify her compassionate spirit and desire to make a positive impact on the world.
