Bloody: Police shoot Taxi driver dead at Gbi Wegbe
Bismark Charles Opare, a 29-year-old taxi driver, died on Saturday as a result of a stray bullet discharged during a police operation in Gbi Wegbe, Hohoe Municipality.
Mr. Jonathan Lamptey, Assistant Commissioner of Police and Hohoe Divisional Commander, confirmed the incident to the GNA and said an investigation had begun.
He urged the youth to remain calm and help the police with their investigations.
Mr. Andy Agbi, the deceased’s cousin, confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Saturday, saying the body had been sent to the morgue for autopsy.
He claimed the cousin was not involved in the alleged police operation and was merely a bystander when he was hit by the bullet around 0000 hours.
According to Mr Agbi, information available to them indicated that the aforementioned officers were not from the Hohoe Municipality, but rather from Ho on a special mission.
He stated that his last meeting with the deceased occurred following the Argentina-Netherlands match on Friday, December 9, during the ongoing World Cup tournament in Qatar, and that he only received the tragic message at 0137 hours.
Mr. Agbi stated that he rushed to see his cousin’s lifeless body, which had an opening on the left side of his abdomen, exposing the internal organs.
He stated that the town’s family and youth were patiently waiting for the law to take its course and believed that justice would be served.
Mr. Agbi, who led the GNA around the incident scene, demonstrated how bullets fired had penetrated a nearby wall.
An unnamed eyewitness said he followed the situation until the deceased was struck.
He stated that the officers, who were in two Police vehicles, wore no uniforms that identified them as members of the Service.
According to an eyewitness, after the football game, a young man went out to retrieve something from his vehicle, which was parked at a town roundabout, but he was handcuffed without breaking the law.
He claimed that the handcuffed youth was led to his house by police officers, who were apparently conducting a search.
The witness stated that residents in the area followed the officers until they arrived at their destination and watched as the officers banged into the suspect’s room, brought out some items, and arrested one other person.
He claimed that as people gathered, police officers fired warning shots, one of which allegedly struck Opare as he screamed for help until he died.
Mr. Agbi stated that the deceased’s body was taken to the morgue around 0900 hours on Saturday.
Officers then left the scene with those arrested, as well as the items taken from the house.
