Ghanaian Women who fought tirelessly in the Independence struggle of Ghana
It is quite unfortunate that women has been sidelined when honoring intelligentsia who fought tirelessly to achieve self-government for Ghana.
Women played crucial roles in agitation against the worst political administration of the British colonial rule, which was significant in the independent struggle process.
Some women worked beyond unexpectedly with intention of cooperating together and achieve a common goal.
The women used different approaches in fighting and mobilizing their fellow women to support the intelligentsia in opposing the will of the Europeans.
These approaches include forming groups such as market women associations, traders Unions while others also engaged in activism in opposing the government.
With these approaches, they were able to mobilize the women in the breadth and width of the country.
Some faces challenge both internally and externally, but they defied all odds and campaign against the harsh and unfavorable administration ministered by the British.

Rebeca Naa Dedei Aryeetey
Rebeca Naa Dedei Aryeetey was among the popular women who actively engaged in the independence Struggle of Gold Coast (Ghana). She was a native of Osu in Greater Accra Region of Ghana. As political enthusiasts, she joined the Nkrumah’s Convention People’s Party and offered a significant support to the party. She was a key financier for the party and helped Nkrumah to win the 1951 general election.
She supported the Party with all her resources, but she became an enemy to the opposition United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC). Furthermore, she died when the CPP held their annual Congress at Ho in June1961. It is alleged that she died as a result of food poison.
Mabel Dove
Mabel Dove who rouse all ranks to become the first female to be elected into the Legislative Council was among the women who agitated for independence of Gold Coast (Ghana).
Mabel Dove was a journalist, Political activist and writer who uses her mediums to oppose the British government. As a writer with Accra Evening News and member of the CPP, she mobilized the women to join the party since the nature of the Party is mass, that is it membership is open to everyone irrespective of their background and status in the country. Through her, a good deal of political consciousness was spread among the women in the county.
Akua Asabea
Akua Asabea played a significant role by supporting Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s Convention People’s Party (CPP) to gained independence for Ghana in 1957.
She became a member of the Executive Council of the Party. She was a trained journalist and a Lawyer who partnered with Mabel Dove to agitate against the British through the Media.
She criticized the British government and ensured that things are going on effectively in favor of the ordinary citizens.
As a writer, she wrote a series of articles backs lashing the British. She became the secretary for Dr Kwame Nkrumah and ensures that aims of Nkrumah is being conveyed to indigenous people without any interference from the opposition United Gold Coast Convention( UGCC) and the British
Hannah Kudjoe
Madam Hannah Cudjoe cannot be left out when mentioning prominent Ghanaian women who contributed immensely in the Independence Struggle of Ghana. As a Nationalist, she worked as philanthropist and mobilizing the women in the Northern Region of Ghana. She promoted the good news of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) to many women in the colony which contributed to Nkrumah success in the 1951,1954 and 1956 elections which paved the way for Ghana’s independence in 1957. Even after independence, Hannah Cudjoe founded All Africans women associations focusing on Pan Africanism
