The silence of NUGS and 2024 WASSCE results crisis: A call to action
Politics has eroded the foundations of many common interest groups in Ghana, including the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS). The once vibrant voice of students has now been muted by political interference, leaving the union unable or unwilling to advocate for its core constituency.
A glaring example of this failure is the current delay in the release of the 2024 WASSCE results due to the government’s inability to settle its debt of over GHS 140 million to West African Examinations Council
Despite the seriousness of this issue, the Nationa Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) remains silent—focusing instead on serving the interests of political leaders rather than students.
As tertiary institutions prepare to release their admission lists for 2025, thousands of WASSCE candidates are left stranded, uncertain about their future.
The authorities remain indifferent, perhaps because their children are not affected, while NUGS refuses to take a stand for fear of exposing the incompetence of the political establishment it now serves. How did we reach this point? Who is responsible for this mess?
Adding to the frustration, WAEC has just released its Christmas break schedule, signalling that if the government fails to settle its debt by today, it is highly unlikely that the 2024 WASSCE results will be released this year.
This delay will further compound the anxiety and despair of students who have worked tirelessly and now face an uncertain future.
I call on NUGS to rise to the occasion and pressure the government to fulfil its financial obligations to WAEC immediately.
This is a critical moment for the union to prove it still stands for the interests of Ghanaian students. Failure to act now will only deepen the crisis and betray the trust of the very people NUGS was created to serve.
